Tooth Extraction – What to Expect and How It Heals

Tooth extraction is one of the most common dental procedures — often quick, simple, and performed under local anaesthesia. We provide safe, comfortable tooth removal with expert care and clear aftercare guidance.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?

You may need a dental extraction if:

  • A tooth is too damaged or decayed to be restored with fillings or crown
  • There’s a serious infection or abscess
  • Gum disease has loosened the tooth
  • Wisdom teeth are impacted, infected or painful
  • There’s crowding before orthodontic treatment

How Is a Tooth Extraction Performed?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so the area is completely numb — you’ll feel pressure but no pain. The tooth is gently cleaned, loosened and then removed. In some cases, the gum may be opened or the tooth sectioned to allow easier removal. Stitches may be used to support healing.

The appointment usually takes 20–40 minutes depending on the tooth and complexity. Wisdom tooth removals may take up to 90 minutes.

What Happens After the Extraction?

Recovery is usually quick. Swelling, mild discomfort, and a little bleeding are normal in the first 24–48 hours. Most people feel much better within 2–3 days.

Aftercare includes:

  • Biting on gauze for 20–45 minutes after treatment
  • Avoiding rinsing, spitting, or smoking for at least 72 hours
  • Using warm saltwater rinses after 24 hours
  • Eating soft, cool foods and avoiding straws
  • Taking paracetamol or ibuprofen as needed

Stitches (if used) dissolve within 7–10 days.

How Long Does It Take to Heal?

Initial healing usually takes 1–2 weeks. The socket gradually closes and the bone underneath will regenerate over time. You’ll be advised when to return to normal eating and brushing.
The gum tissue closes over the socket, but deeper bone healing continues underneath — out of sight — for several months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tooth extraction painful?
No — local anaesthetic ensures the area is numb. You may feel pressure, but you won’t feel pain during the procedure.

Can I go to work after a tooth extraction?
Yes, most people return to work the next day. If your case is more complex, you may prefer to rest for a day or two.

Will I need a replacement for the missing tooth?
If it’s not a wisdom tooth, a replacement may be recommended. Options include dental implants, bridges, or dentures.
